Terrorist Babies August 12, 2010

The new bugbear in the Republican culture of complaint is the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which confers citizenship on anyone born in the U.S.  Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), among others, has been arguing that this constitutes a terrorist threat.

Apparently, Gohmert thinks that terrorists plan to immigrate to the U.S. and have babies who, when they grow up, will attack Americans and “help destroy our way of life.” And he claims to have gotten this information from “a retired FBI agent“.

But Tom Fuentes a former FBI Assistant Director from 2004-2008 isn’t buying this latest bit of Republican crazy.

“The FBI has 75 offices overseas, including offices in Jordan, Turkey, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Pakistan,” explained Fuentes. “There was never a credible report — or any report, for that matter — coming across through all the various mechanisms of communication to indicate that there was such a plan for these terror babies to be born.

“Also, I’d like to add, there seems to be a lot of former FBI agents lurking in the halls of Congress and in the legislature in the state of Texas, so I’m kind of curious about that issue as well.”

“I think — in this case, I think the FBI has knocked this story down completely, officially or unofficially,” Fuentes also added. “I think at first they didn’t want to comment on it just because they didn’t want to lend any credence to the people spreading it, but realized that there has to be some comment or else the no comment, you know, means there might be some secret classified information out there, but — but there is no credible information about this particular aspect.”

As usual, Republicans are simply lying to the public in order gin up fear.

Haven’t we heard this sort of thing before? Something about weapons of mass destruction and mushroom clouds?

Charity in the 21st Century apparently means punishing children for the “sins” of their parents.

The Salvation Army and a charity affiliated with the Houston Fire Department are among those that consider immigration status, asking for birth certificates or Social Security cards for the children.

The point isn’t to punish the children but to ensure that their parents are either citizens, legal immigrants or working to become legal residents, said Lorugene Young, whose Outreach Program Inc. is one of three groups that distribute toys collected by firefighters.

“It’s not our desire to turn anyone down,” she said. “Those kids are not responsible if they are here illegally. It is the parents’ responsibility.”

Why does the Salvation Army care about the immigration status of the recipients of their charity? Apparently only “the right sort” of children deserve toys and food.

This organization of bigots doesn’t deserve anybody’s cash.

Those of us on the left have to be very happy with President Obama’s bold agenda coming out of the gate. See Political Animal for a summary.

The NYT explained that Obama’s proposal is “nothing less than an attempt to end a three-decade era of economic policy dominated by the ideas of Ronald Reagan and his supporters.” The budget is “a bold, even radical departure from recent history,” which would “lay the groundwork for sweeping changes in health care and education,” and “reverse the rapid increase in economic inequality over the last 30 years.”

But there is still lots of room for improvement. If activists want a new cause celebre how about those ICE raids. From Calitics.

Up in Bellingham, Washington, a town just a few miles from the Canadian border, Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted a “raid” on an engine plant, arresting 28 workers. The raid stirred outrage among many progressives who had hoped that the secret police tactics of the Bush-era ICE (and I’m sorry, but that’s really the best way to describe it) would end with the new administration.

These “raids”, several of which have hit California communities, making temporary orphans of children whose parents go to work and are thrown into prison camps with no warning or provision made for care of the children (or in cases in Texas, the children themselves are thrown into the camps), have been a prime target of immigrant rights and human rights groups.
